Advanced Fashion Technology

Learned software environment skills needed to create illustrations using vector tools in Adobe Illustrator, within the context of garment design and construction, surface textiles and fashion graphics. Primary use of Adobe Suite (Ai) software.

Draping

Fundamental concepts for developing original designs by using draping techniques. Full size dress forms are used for creation of basic sloper and original designs in knits and wovens.

Fashion Fundamentals

Overview of fashion terminology, designers of the 21st century, careers, trends, and influences of fashion.

Fashion Technology

Gain an understanding of computer software in merchandising and fashion industry scenarios. Create/access, organize, analyze and communicate information using Photoshop software

  • Apply knowledge of a computer's operating system, organize and manage programs and information

  • Integrate/synthesize and communicate information via a computer-generated report and/or presentation

Forecasting and Branding

Understand the role of forecasting in the textile and apparel industries

  • Analyze current fashion within a theoretical framework

  • Understand and identify past and future trends

  • Identify and understand societal changes and the impact of fashion trend and branding

  • Comprehend the breadth and depth of the forecasting process

  • Follow the forecast continually to determine reasons for significant deviations from expectations

Flat Pattern

Learned fundamental concepts of drafting for the basic female and male form and pattern manipulation techniques to develop original garments.

Fundamentals of Fit and Construction

Builds on current construction and fit evaluation skills. Industrial equipment is used to construct women’s, men’s, children’s and accessories. Industry techniques are utilized.

History of Fashion

The study of fashion evolution from B.C. to current fashion and how the influences of social, economic, political, technological and global cultures impact garments and accessories.

Recognize, describe, and visually date historic fashion

  • Understand the correlation between men's, women's, and children's fashions and the social, economic, artistic, and political environmental influences through the ages

  • Recognize the value of studying historic costume and appreciate how it has influenced garment/accessory design inspirations of today

  • Know the philosophies, inspirations, and influences of well-known designers that influence current fashion design

  • Demonstrate an understanding of historic costume documentation through class participation and individual projects

Industry Formulas and Calculations

Basic retail and buying formulas are examined for the purpose of understanding six-month merchandising plans and open-to-buy calculations.

Examine current fashion industry principles and practices by applying the case study method of analysis

  • Develop critical thinking and communication skills by constructing and defending alternative solutions to actual business challenges through case development and computer applications

  • Explore moral and ethical issues that face businesses today

  • Understanding merchandising six-month budgeting, and open-to-buy preparation in merchandising

Principles of Element and Design

The fundamentals of design; introduction to principles and elements of design as applied to apparel line development through the use of fashion illustration and technical drawings.

Product Development

Course examines an apparel line development from concept to consumer. A focus on seasonal collections for product categories and merchandising classifications.

Product Quality and Global Sourcing

This course focuses on the communication of apparel development. Emphasis on quality, sourcing and technical packages.

Identify and appreciate the differences in garment components and garment identification

  • Understand and apply fabric and finding effect on apparel performance

  • Understand size and fits effect on apparel performance

  • Understand and identify stitch and seams effect on apparel performance

  • Develop skills and apply learned skills to understand standards and specifications

  • Understand the role of sourcing in the product development process

Textiles

Study of textiles and their components (fibers, yarns, fabrics and finishes) as they relate to end use, performance, quality and customer satisfaction.

Know and use correct terminology to identify and discuss textiles

  • Analyze the textile industry and understand the evaluation of apparel and interior textiles

  • Identify the chemical structure and properties of textiles (fiber, yarn, construction method/structure, and finish, including color) and relate to textile characteristics and to scientific principles as a means of explaining performance and serviceability

  • Identify fibers, yarns, and fabrics by construction methods/structures and relate construction methods to textile characteristics as a means of explaining performance and serviceability

  • Comprehend the interrelationships of the components of textile products (fiber, yarn, construction method/structure, and finish, including color), science principles and the importance of these interrelationships in the selection, use, and care of textiles.
